Back to Basics (Makasutu Culture Forest)
"Makasutu" (translates as 'holy' or 'deep' forest in Mandinka) is a palm forest situated on a beautiful meandering tributary of The Gambia River (Madina Bolong) and includes many different eco-systems: mangroves, sand flats, savannah and dense riverine forest. The forest is a great sighting place for hundreds of hooded vultures, inquisitive Guinea baboons, a large variety of African birds and even some European birds like the Pied Wagtail, spending time here as a resident tourist. The buildings at "Makasutu" have been fashioned with great skill by the owners and local craftsmen. Beautiful wood carvings, all made from the premises have been carved from the trunks of the fallen trees and are to be seen everywhere. Most of the employees at Makasutu are from the surrounding villages, as are the products (fruits, vegetables, building materials etc.); thus encouraging community-based initiatives.
"Makasutu" offers a variety of experiences for day visitors: a trip in the bolong (creek) in a dug-out canoe; educative walks in the forest; wonderful views across the salt flats where bird life abounds, and a typical Gambian lunch. The exhilarating cultural drumming by people from the surrounding villages and the sight of palm wine tappers scaling up the tall oil palms to collect the sap is invaluable. The wonder of "Makasutu" lies in its outstanding architecture, peaceful environment and its beautiful setting.
